Nils Kupzok, PhD

PostDoc @ Columbia U

I’m a political scientist at Columbia University and its Center for Political Economy, focusing on environmental and climate policy. I research questions such as why some governments spend more on decarbonization than others, why some central banks go green and others don't, and why carbon pollution is priced so unevenly across the globe. I also engage with deeper historical questions, such as how we came to see climate change predominantly through economic lenses.

My research has been published in journals such as Perspectives on PoliticsPolitics & Society, the Journal of European Public PolicySocio-Economic Review, the Review of International Political Economy, and Foreign Affairs. My work has also recevied several awards, including the 2023 Emerging Scholar Prize from Foreign Affairs and the University of Pennsylvania's Perry World HouseYou can find out more about my reseach agenda on my projects site, including a primer on my book project, Saving the Climate by Serving the Economy: How Climate Policy Became a Means to Economic Ends as well as an introduction to my unique Fiscal Climate Policy Database.

You can find my CV here. Please also check out my bluesky feed for news and opinions. Lastly, a lot of my work involves reaching out to the people who make the green transition work, so please feel invited to send me an email if you have any questions.
